Agathonissi to Astypalea is a long westward crossing on the Dodekanisos Pride, taking a little over five hours. Astypalea sits out on its own between the Dodecanese and the Cyclades, so the boat leaves the usual north-south chain and strikes across open water. It is one of the longest legs the fast craft runs.

Arrival is at Skala, also known as Pera Gialos, directly below the Chora, with the Venetian kastro on the ridge above the harbour. Astypalea is whitewashed and low-key, closer to a Cycladic island than a Dodecanese one in look and feel, and popular with Greek visitors for exactly that reason. Beaches are easy-going and the Chora's lanes are a short climb from the quay.

Direct sailings run only a couple of times a fortnight, so this needs booking around a fixed date rather than treated as a flexible option. The current timetable and fares are shown below. If the direct boat does not work, Kalymnos and Kos both offer more regular Astypalea connections, and the island has a small airport with domestic flights.
