Agia Marina on Leros to Astypalea takes around three and a half hours on Dodekanisos Seaways' catamaran Dodekanisos Pride. Astypalea lies out to the west of the main Dodecanese chain, which makes it awkward to reach and gives this sailing its value. It is a longer open-water run than most of the company's hops.
Astypalea is butterfly-shaped and feels more Cycladic than Dodecanesian, whitewashed and quiet, and popular with Greeks looking for somewhere unhurried. Ferries arrive at Skala, or Pera Gialos, directly below the Chora, with the Venetian kastro on the hilltop above the harbour. There are good low-key beaches around the island and an airport for domestic flights.
