Agia Marina to Piraeus Route Map

Map of the Saronic Gulf showing the ferry route north-north-east from Agia Marina to Piraeus.

Agia Marina, on the east coast of Aegina, connects directly back to Piraeus in about half an hour on the fast craft Magic 2 and Magic 3, operated by Magic Sea Ferries alongside Hellenic Seaways. It is a quicker route than going via Aegina Town for anyone staying on that side of the island. The boats are high-speed passenger craft rather than car ferries.

Piraeus is the main port of Athens, a few kilometres southwest of the centre and one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe. It is a large multi-gate port with berths numbered E1 to E12, so it pays to know which gate you need before arriving. The metro and suburban rail terminus sits by the harbour and runs directly into central Athens, and Mikrolimano marina and the archaeological museum are both nearby.

The route runs several times a day through the summer and is largely seasonal. Current departures, operators and fares are shown in the table below. From Piraeus you can pick up connections to the Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete and the rest of the Saronic islands.

Can you rent a car in Piraeus?

Yes, several agencies meet passengers directly at the ferry gates (E1 to E12), so there is no need to arrange transport into central Athens first. It suits travellers continuing on to the mainland rather than islanders, since central Athens is only 20 minutes away and has good metro and bus links. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Agia Marina to Piraeus ferry

  • If you feel claustrophobic in enclosed spaces, reserve a window seat or opt for an outdoor berth – the open deck is always available.
  • Many short island ferries operate on a strict schedule with no tolerance for late arrivals; being even a minute or two late can mean missing your sailing.
  • The flat bow (prow) area of a large ferry is usually accessible and offers outstanding forward views – one of the best spots to stand during harbour entry.
  • Short-hop vessels are often smaller and more susceptible to even minor chop – take seasickness precautions on exposed short routes if you are at all sensitive.
  • Ferries from Piraeus depart from the main port of Athens, giving easy access to the Acropolis, the world-class Acropolis Museum, and the ancient Agora. The historic Plaka neighbourhood at the foot of the Acropolis hill, with its neoclassical lanes, Roman ruins, and traditional tavernas, is the most atmospheric place to spend time before or after your crossing.
