Astypalea to Pythagorio is a long northward run on the Dodekanisos Pride, the Dodekanisos Seaways catamaran, taking close to six hours. The route works its way up the Dodecanese chain before crossing to the south coast of Samos in the northeast Aegean. It is a full day's travel, so plan on arriving in the afternoon or evening.
Pythagorio is a small port town named after the island's most famous son, and it is a more relaxed harbour than Vathy, the main port on the north side of Samos. Logothetis Castle overlooks the yacht and fishing harbour, and the town has beaches within easy reach. Nearby are the ancient Heraion temple ruins and the Eupalinos tunnel, a UNESCO-listed ancient aqueduct cut straight through a hill.
Sailings are about once a week, with the current timetable and fares shown in the table below. Fares start around fifty-six euros. Ferry links from Pythagorio are more limited than from Vathy, mainly seasonal connections to nearby islands and the Turkish coast, so check both Samos ports when planning onward moves.
