Chalki to Patmos takes just under four hours on Dodekanisos Seaways' fast catamaran, Dodekanisos Express. The route runs the length of the central Dodecanese with calls along the way, which is why a fast craft still takes most of a morning. Seating is airline-style and outside deck space is limited, so it is a sit-down journey rather than a deck-watching one.

The catamaran docks at Skala, the port of Patmos, with the fortified Monastery of St John visible on the Chora hill above. Pilgrims come for the monastery and the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St John is said to have written the Book of Revelation, and the island's UNESCO status has kept development notably restrained. Quiet beaches and a low-key atmosphere do the rest.
