Chryssomilia to Karlovassi is the longest leg the Megalochari runs, about an hour and twenty-five minutes north across open water from the Fourni archipelago to Samos. Sea Gem Maritime operate it as a local service, and the boat is small, so the crossing is noticeably weather-dependent. It is the standard way islanders reach the bigger shops and the mainland ferries.
Karlovassi is the second town of Samos, on the north coast west of the capital at Vathy. It has more of a working, university-town feel than the island's holiday centres, and divides between Old and New Karlovassi. The port is a short distance from the town itself, and it makes a sensible base for the western half of Samos.
The route runs only a couple of times a week, so it needs building into a plan rather than treated as an option on the day. Current departures and fares are shown below. From Karlovassi the Blue Star ships continue to Piraeus, Ikaria and the Dodecanese, so onward travel is straightforward once you are there.
