Elafonissos to Pounta is a ten-minute shuttle across the narrow channel between the island and the Laconian mainland, operated by Elafonisos Ferries. Small landing-craft style boats run it, taking cars, vans and foot passengers on an open deck, and you are on and off almost before you have settled. It is the only ferry link the island has.

Pounta is a minimal harbour on the Laconia coast rather than a town, with little there beyond the slipway and parking. Its whole function is as the mainland end of the Elafonissos crossing, and most people drive straight on. Neapoli is the nearest place of any size, a short distance down the coast.

The shuttle runs continuously through the day rather than to a sparse timetable, with sailings roughly every half hour in summer and less often in winter. Current departures and fares are shown below. From Pounta the road runs north through Laconia towards Sparta and Gythio, or south to Neapoli for the Kythira ferry.
