Worth it if you plan to reach beaches like Elia or Kalafatis and the far side of the island, since buses run less often outside town. Do you need a car on Folegandros?

Not essential. Folegandros is small, and the bus that meets every ferry runs the 3.5km from the port at Karavostasis up to Chora in about ten minutes for a couple of euros.
