Fourni to Nisyros is a long southbound run of close to seven hours on Blue Star Ferries' Blue Star Patmos. The ship calls at several Dodecanese islands on the way, so the trip breaks into manageable stages rather than being one continuous leg. It is a conventional ferry with proper seating, decks and a bar.
Nisyros is a volcanic island, and ferries tie up at Mandraki, the main village on the north-west coast. The island's caldera is the reason most people come, reached by local bus or on foot from the port, and there is a sulphurous, otherworldly quality to the crater floor. Mandraki is small and walkable, with tavernas and rooms close to the quay.
Sailings run roughly once a week, so this needs planning rather than improvising. The current timetable and fares are shown in the table below. Kos is the usual alternative, with far more frequent short crossings across to Nisyros.
