Glossa, at the northern end of Skopelos, connects across to Platanias on the South Pelion peninsula in around an hour to an hour and a quarter. Mantoudi Lines runs the route with the Zefyros, and it is a conventional crossing rather than a fast-craft dash, taking you over open water towards the mainland coast. It is a useful alternative to the longer haul into Volos.

Platanias is a quiet rural harbour on the Pelion coast rather than a resort, with no great landmark at the quayside. Travellers use it mainly as an alternative mainland gateway to the Sporades, stepping off into the forested hills and small stone villages of the Pelion peninsula. If you are heading inland or driving on, it puts you in the south of the peninsula straight away.

The route runs a couple of times a day through the season and is limited or absent outside it, so it needs planning around. Current sailings and fares are listed below. Onward road connections from Platanias run up the Pelion peninsula towards Volos and the wider Thessaly network.

Can you rent a car at Glossa on Skopelos?

Yes, small local agencies operate right at Loutraki, Glossa's port, some barely 100 metres from the pier. Many online booking platforms, though, list pickup at Skopelos Town instead, about 28km and a 40-45 minute drive away, so check the exact pickup point before booking.
