Katapola to Ios is covered both by Seajets on the Super Jet 2 and Superjet, in a little over two hours, and by Small Cyclades Lines on the Express Scopelitis, which takes more than five as it works round the smaller islands. The two experiences are quite different: one is a quick enclosed hop, the other a slow local ferry with plenty of deck time. Choose according to whether you value the time or the journey.

Ios sits between Naxos and Santorini, and the port is at Ormos, the harbour village a few kilometres below the hilltop Chora. Buses run up to Chora and down to Mylopotas, the island's main beach. Ios has a long-standing reputation as a party island, though the beaches and the quieter northern and eastern corners are a good deal calmer than that suggests.
