Katapola on Amorgos to Kos is a long eastward crossing on Blue Star Ferries' Blue Star 2, taking around five and a half hours. It is one of the routes that links the Cyclades with the Dodecanese, so it covers real open water and calls at islands along the way. The ship is large and stable, with cabins, seating lounges and food on board, which makes the length of the trip easy enough to absorb.

Kos is a big, busy Dodecanese island close to the Turkish coast, and the main harbour sits right beside Kos Town's medieval Castle of the Knights. Arrivals find a proper town with hotels, buses and car hire immediately to hand. The island is flat and much of it is explored by bicycle, with beach resorts along the coast and the ancient Asklepieion a short ride out of town.

This is a once-a-week sort of service rather than a daily one, and it is seasonal in nature, so it needs planning well ahead. The current timetable and fares are shown below, with tickets starting around €43. From Kos there are frequent onward links to Rhodes, Kalymnos, Patmos and the rest of the Dodecanese.
