Katapola to Leros takes around three and a half hours on Blue Star Ferries' Blue Star 2, part of the seasonal service that connects Amorgos with the Dodecanese. It is a large conventional ferry, so the crossing is comfortable even when the meltemi is blowing across this stretch of the Aegean. Expect calls at other islands as part of the wider route.

Leros is one of the quieter Dodecanese islands, and the ferry docks at Lakki, a harbour lined with striking Italian Art Deco buildings from the 1930s. Lakki is the ferry port rather than the island's main town; Platanos, with the hilltop Castle of Pandeli above it, and the beach village of Agia Marina are a short drive away. The island has a deliberately understated feel and suits travellers who want somewhere unhurried.

Sailings are around once a week and seasonal, so plan around them rather than assuming flexibility. The current timetable and fares are shown below, with fares starting near €33. Leros connects easily onward to Kalymnos, Patmos and Kos.
