Kavala to Mesta on Chios is a long southbound run of around eleven and three quarter hours, operated by Seajets with the Aquablue. It calls at islands on the way down the North Aegean, which is why the crossing takes as long as it does. The Aquablue is a conventional ferry carrying vehicles, with cabins and lounges for what is in practice an overnight sailing.
Mesta sits in the Mastichochoria, the mastic villages of southern Chios, and is the best preserved of them, a fortified medieval settlement of interlocking stone houses built as a defence against pirate raids. Walking into it feels more like entering a single building than a village. The nearby harbour at Limenas Mesta serves this route, with Chios town about thirty kilometres away to the northeast.
The service runs about once a week in season and does not operate year round, so the timetable and fares below are the thing to check first. Once on Chios there are buses to Chios town and frequent onward ferries to Piraeus, Lesvos and Cesme in Turkey.
