This is one of the longest ferry runs on the Greek network, from Kavala in the far north down to Patmos in the Dodecanese. Blue Star Ferries operates it with the Diagoras, and the journey takes around twenty-two and a half hours with calls at several islands en route. It is a full overnight passage and then some, so plan for a cabin.
Ferries dock at Skala, the port town of Patmos, with the hilltop Chora rising above and the fortified Monastery of St John crowning the ridge. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the monastery and the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St John is said to have written the Book of Revelation, are the main reason people come. Development has been kept in check as a result, and the island stays low-key for its size, with quiet beaches away from the port.
Sailings run only a couple of times a fortnight, so this is a route for people already in northern Greece rather than a first choice. The current timetable and fares are in the tables below. Most travellers reach Patmos from Piraeus, Kos or Samos, all of which are served far more frequently.
