Kavala to Psara is one of the long haul crossings of the North Aegean, linking the mainland port in Macedonia with a small island west of Chios. Hellenic Seaways runs it with the Nissos Samos, and the sailing takes around nineteen hours, so it is very much an overnight passage with calls at other islands along the way. Book a cabin or at least settle in properly, because this is a night at sea rather than a hop.
Psara is remote and sparsely populated, rugged and traditional, and one of the quieter Greek islands by any measure. The harbour town, also called Psara, has a modest waterfront with a few tavernas and a monument to the island's history, and the whole place carries the weight of its part in the 1824 Greek War of Independence. There is little in the way of resort infrastructure, which is the point for most people who make the trip.
Sailings are rare, running only a couple of times a fortnight, so the route needs planning around rather than turning up for. The current timetable and fares are shown in the tables below.
