The crossing from Koufonissi to Ios takes about three hours on the Seajets high-speed boats, usually the Super Jet 2 or Superjet. The route threads south-west across the central Cyclades, generally calling at other islands on the way rather than running direct. It is a fast, enclosed sort of journey, comfortable enough but not one for long spells on deck.

Ios sits between Naxos and Santorini and has a long-standing reputation as a lively island popular with younger travellers, though there are quieter corners away from the main strip. Boats dock at the harbour village of Ormos, a few kilometres below the hilltop Chora, with buses running up the hill and down to Mylopotas beach. The harbour itself has tavernas, ticket agents and enough shade to wait out a connection.
