Kythnos to Piraeus is the direct run back to Athens, operated by Seajets on the fast craft Champion Jet1 in around an hour and a half. It is a high-speed catamaran, so all passengers are seated inside and there is no open deck to wander, but it makes the western Cyclades a genuine short break from the capital. Cars are carried on the fast craft, though space is limited.
Piraeus is the main port of Athens and one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe, a few kilometres south-west of the city centre. It is a sprawling place with numbered gates from E1 to E12, so it pays to note which gate you land at and where the exit is. The metro terminus is on the edge of the port and runs straight into central Athens, and there are buses to the airport from the harbour front.
The service runs roughly once a day through the season, thinning outside it. Current departures, operator and fares are shown in the table below, starting around €18. If the fast craft does not suit, the conventional ferries on the western Cyclades line also serve Kythnos, taking longer but usually costing less.
