Kythnos to Serifos Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route south-south-east from Kythnos to Serifos.

Kythnos to Serifos is the quickest leg of the western Cyclades chain, taking between forty minutes and just over an hour depending on the boat. Seajets runs the fast craft Champion Jet1 and Magic Sea Ferries the Hsc Cat I, both high-speed catamarans with seated indoor accommodation rather than open decks. It is short enough that you are back on your feet almost as soon as you have settled.

Serifos is a rugged, arid island with one of the most striking hilltop Choras in the Cyclades, a tumble of white houses spilling down a steep cone above the port. Boats dock at Livadi, a sheltered bay with tavernas along the front and a bus running up the switchbacks to Chora. Beyond that it is uncrowded beaches, walking routes and the remains of the island's old iron-ore mining works.

The route runs a couple of times most days in high season across the two operators, tailing off outside it. Current sailings, vessels and fares are shown in the table below, with fast-craft fares starting around €44. Serifos also sits on the Piraeus line, so onward connections south to Sifnos and Milos are easy to combine.

Hiring a car

Do you need a car on Serifos?

Not strictly. Chora sits on a hill about 4.5km above the port at Livadi, and a bus, roughly fifteen minutes for two euros, runs regularly between the two in summer. A car or scooter, hired from the small handful of offices in Livadi, makes sense for reaching the island's scattered beaches, but book ahead: the rental fleet is limited and August sells out fast. Tips for the Kythnos to Serifos ferry

  • Routes that are seasonal only often have limited or no service in winter; neighbouring islands may require a land or air connection during the closed period.
  • At smaller island ports, taxis are scarce; book one in advance or confirm with your hotel that a transfer is arranged.
  • If your crossing is rough and you have children who feel unwell, the best remedy is fresh air on the lee side of the deck and a light ginger biscuit.
  • Many short island ferries operate on a strict schedule with no tolerance for late arrivals; being even a minute or two late can mean missing your sailing.
  • In Serifos, the hilltop Chora perched dramatically above the port is one of the most striking capital towns in the Cyclades, with chapels, churches, and windmills scattered through its whitewashed lanes. The island's beaches are never overcrowded, and the walking trails connecting them reward those who prefer to explore on foot.
