Magic Sea Ferries' Hsc Cat I covers Lavrio to Serifos in around two and a half hours, which makes it one of the quicker ways into the western Cyclades from the Athens area. As a high-speed craft it carries vehicles as well as passengers, but seating is indoors and there is little in the way of open deck. Lavrio is about an hour from central Athens by road, so factor that in.
Serifos is a rugged, dry island whose Chora spills down a steep hillside above the port. The ferry berths at Livadi, a sheltered bay with most of the island's accommodation and tavernas, and the climb up to Chora is one of the standard first evenings. Beyond that it is uncrowded beaches, walking trails and the remains of an iron-mining industry that once dominated the island.
The service runs roughly daily through the season, which makes short trips practical. Current departures and fares are listed below. Serifos sits on the same line as Sifnos, Kimolos and Milos, so it slots easily into a western Cyclades run rather than needing to be visited on its own.
