Leros to Chios is a long northbound run on the Blue Star Ferries vessel Diagoras, taking between about six hours and just under ten depending on the calls made along the way. It is one of the services that stitches the Dodecanese to the North Aegean, so it covers a lot of open water and a good deal of the eastern Aegean coastline.

Chios town is both the main port and the island's substantial capital, with a Genoese-era castle overlooking the old quarter near the harbour. The island is best known for mastic, the resin grown only here, and for the medieval mastic villages inland, including Mesta and Pyrgi with its geometric sgraffito facades. Nea Moni, the eleventh-century monastery in the hills, is UNESCO-listed, and the island overall feels more workaday and less touristed than the Cyclades.

Sailings run a few times a fortnight, so this is one to plan carefully rather than assume. The current timetable, vessel and fares are shown in the table below, from around €43. Chios connects onward to Lesvos, Samos and Piraeus, and has an airport with domestic flights if you would rather not do the return leg by sea.
