Mesta to Kavala is one of the longest single legs in the northern Aegean, around twelve hours on the Seajets Aquablue. It runs the length of the eastern Aegean from southern Chios up to the Macedonian coast, calling at other islands on the way. Fares start around €29, which is modest for the distance covered.
Kavala is a substantial port city in Eastern Macedonia, with the old Panagia quarter climbing the headland above the harbour and the Kamares aqueduct crossing the town. It is a proper city rather than a resort, with an airport and good road connections. Philippi and the Thassos crossings are both close by.
The service runs about once a week in season, and the current timetable and fares are shown below. Given the length of the crossing, this is worth treating as a full travel day rather than a leg to squeeze in. Mesta is a mastic village on southern Chios; Chios Town's main port, around thirty kilometres away, has far more frequent connections.
