Milos to Chania Route Map

Map of the south Aegean showing the ferry route south-south-west from Milos to Chania.

Blue Star Ferries links Milos with Chania in western Crete, a crossing of around four hours over open water. It is one of the more useful southbound routes from the western Cyclades, saving the long detour via Piraeus or Santorini. Blue Star ships carry vehicles and have generous deck space, so it is a comfortable enough passage in reasonable weather.

Chania is the second-largest city on Crete, on the northwest coast, and one of the most attractive towns on the island. The old quarter is a mix of Venetian and Ottoman building, centred on the Venetian harbour with its lighthouse and the waterfront Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque. It is also the gateway to the White Mountains and the Samaria Gorge. Note that the ferry port is at Souda, a deep harbour a few kilometres east of town, not the picturesque old harbour itself, so plan for a bus or taxi in.

Sailings run around once a day through the season and drop away outside it, so the timetable below is worth checking for your dates, along with current fares and journey times. From Chania you have onward links along the north coast of Crete by road, and Souda also serves the overnight route to Piraeus.

Hiring a car

Do you need a car in Milos?

Yes, a car is genuinely useful on Milos. The ferry docks at Adamas, the island's main town and bus hub, so pickup is easy and buses cover Plaka and Pollonia, but the schedule is thin and most of the striking beaches, Sarakiniko, Firiplaka, Tsigrado, sit well outside it. Some access roads are unpaved, where standard insurance is void, so compare 4x4 options at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Milos to Chania ferry

  • Arrive at Adamas port at least 30 to 60 minutes before your ferry's scheduled departure, allowing time for check-in and boarding, since the port area becomes busy and congested during the peak summer months.
  • Milos's main bus stop is only a few metres from the port at Adamas, with services roughly timed to ferry arrivals and departures; buy your ticket on board, and check the last departure if you have a late ferry.
  • Adamas port itself has free Wi-Fi, public restrooms, an information booth and the port authority office, plus separate car and motorbike parking areas nearby at Adamas Square if you are arriving by road.
  • On catamaran services, lower deck seats tend to be calmer in rough seas but can feel enclosed; upper deck seats offer more natural light and better views.
  • In Chania, Crete's former capital and second-largest city, you'll find a beautifully preserved Venetian harbour, a richly layered Old Town with Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman traces, and some of the finest Cretan cuisine on the island. Day trips from here reach the pink-sand beach of Elafonissi and the famous Samaria Gorge.
