Blue Star Ferries links Lemnos with Patmos on the Diagoras, a passage of roughly sixteen to eighteen hours depending on which calls the ship makes. It runs the length of the North Aegean before dropping into the northern Dodecanese, so it is a proper overnight journey. Book a cabin rather than planning to sit up.
Patmos' port and main town is Skala, sitting below the hilltop Chora with the fortified Monastery of St John crowning the ridge above. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and draws a mix of pilgrims and quieter, upmarket travellers, so it has stayed low-key for its size. Alongside the monastery and the Cave of the Apocalypse, there are calm beaches within easy reach of Skala.
The direct sailing runs a couple of times a fortnight, so it is worth planning around. Current departures, durations and fares appear below. Patmos is well connected within the Dodecanese, with regular links to Leros, Lipsi, Kalymnos and Kos.
