Patmos to Chios is a long haul north on the Blue Star Ferries vessel Diagoras, taking a little over eight hours. This is part of the through service that links the Dodecanese with the North Aegean, so the boat calls at several islands along the way. It is an overnight or full day passage depending on the sailing, and there is plenty of deck space to spread out.
Chios is a large North Aegean island close to the Turkish coast, historically wealthy from mastic and shipping and much less touristy than the Cyclades. The harbour at Chios town is overlooked by a Genoese era castle in the old quarter. Inland are the medieval mastic villages, Mesta and the geometric facades of Pyrgi among them, and the mosaics at Nea Moni monastery.
The route runs about once a week, so it needs planning rather than improvising. Current departures, journey times and fares are shown in the table below, with fares starting around thirty seven euros. Chios has frequent onward ferries to Piraeus and Lesvos, plus a small airport with Athens flights.
