Patmos to Nisyros Route Map

Map of the Dodecanese showing the ferry route south-east from Patmos to Nisyros.

Patmos to Nisyros takes about two and a half hours on the Dodekanisos Seaways catamaran Dodekanisos Express and up to five hours on the Blue Star Patmos, which calls at Leros, Kalymnos and Kos along the way. It is a run down the middle of the Dodecanese chain rather than a direct crossing. The catamaran is the quicker option but runs to a tighter seasonal schedule.

Nisyros is a small volcanic island, and its caldera with its steaming craters is the reason most people come. Ferries dock at Mandraki, the main village, a compact place of white houses beneath a monastery built into the cliff. Buses and taxis run up to the volcano, and the hill village of Nikia looks straight down into the crater.

The service runs only a couple of times a fortnight, so it needs planning around. Current departures and fares are shown in the table below, starting around twelve euros. Kos is the usual staging point for Nisyros, with frequent short crossings from Kardamena and Kos Town.

Tips for the Patmos to Nisyros ferry

  • Weather cancellations are more common in the shoulder months (October, November, March, April) than in the height of summer, despite summer's meltemi wind.
  • Pets must be kept in the designated pet area and may not enter passenger saloons; bring a lead and any food or water your pet needs for the crossing.
  • If you are comparing ferry versus flying between islands, factor in port transfer times at each end – ferries are often more time-efficient for short hops.
  • Some routes in the Dodecanese chain only operate in full summer mode from June; May sailings may be less frequent than the website implies.
  • On multi-day island-hopping trips, the ferry becomes a mobile base – use the time on board to research your next stop, review maps, and plan the next day.
