Platanias sits on the South Pelion coast, and the run round the peninsula to Volos takes a little under two hours on Mantoudi Lines' Zefyros. It is a mainland to mainland sailing, tracing the Pagasetic Gulf rather than crossing open sea. The road route is considerably longer and slower, which is what makes the boat worth taking.
Volos is a working port city on the Pagasetic Gulf and the capital of Magnesia, with a lively waterfront promenade known for its tsipouradika. The port sits right in the city centre, so you step off into town rather than into an out-of-town terminal. It is the main mainland gateway for the Pelion peninsula and the Sporades.
