Pythagorio to Astypalea is a long run down the Dodecanese with Dodekanisos Seaways on the Dodekanisos Pride, taking around six hours. The catamaran calls at several islands on the way south before striking west to Astypalea, which sits out on its own between the Dodecanese and the Cyclades. It is a full day's travel by fast craft standards.

Astypalea is butterfly-shaped and feels more Cycladic than Dodecanesian, all whitewash and low-key village life. The hilltop Venetian kastro above the Chora overlooks the harbour and is the island's signature landmark. Ferries use Skala, or Pera Gialos, just below the Chora, and the island also has an airport with domestic flights.
