Ferry from Rhodes (Rodos) to Agia Marina (Leros)

Rhodes to Agia Marina on Leros is a Dodekanisos Seaways catamaran run, using the Dodekanisos Express or Dodekanisos Pride. Journey times run from just under four hours on the more direct sailings to around seven and a half hours on routings that call at most of the islands up the chain, so it pays to check which service you are booking. These are fast craft, so seating is airline-style and the crossing is enclosed.

Agia Marina is the commercial and administrative centre of Leros, a working harbour town with Italian-era architecture around it, including the clocktower and the covered market from the 1912 to 1943 administration. The old town of Platanos and the Castle of Pandeli are up the hill just behind. Leros is calmer than Kos or Patmos, with quiet beaches and a good deal of Italian and wartime history.

• Rhodes has two separate ferry ports: large car ferries such as Blue Star Ferries use Akandia, while Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans and small boats to Symi depart from Kolona, just outside the Old Town walls – check your ticket for the correct one.
• Akandia port is roughly a 20-minute walk from the Old Town and has no shelter, seating or toilets while you wait, so it is more comfortable to wait in town and take a taxi straight to your ferry.
• Arrive at least one hour before departure to allow time to check in, since boarding for ferries from Rhodes typically closes around 20 minutes before the scheduled sailing time.
• Photography from the deck is excellent – the golden hour light on island whitewashed buildings as you arrive is hard to match.
