Sifnos and Kythnos sit close together at the western edge of the Cyclades, and the short hop between them is one of the more relaxed inter-island links in this part of the Aegean. Sifnos's boats use Kamares, a modest working harbour a short drive below the hilltop town of Apollonia, while on Kythnos ferries come in at Merichas, a small bayside village that serves as the island's main hub for shops, rooms and tavernas. Sheltered to a degree by the surrounding islands, the crossing is generally gentler than routes that face open water, though a strong summer meltemi can still stir it up for an hour or so.
