Sikinos to Folegandros Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route west-south-west from Sikinos to Folegandros.

This is one of the shortest crossings in the western Cyclades, around thirty-five to fifty minutes between Sikinos and Folegandros. Fast Ferries, Hellenic Seaways and Maistros Santorini all cover it with conventional ships, the Dionisios Solomos, the Artemis and the Maistros Santorini. On a calm day you can stand on deck for the whole thing and watch the coastline change.

Folegandros is a small, rugged island between Milos and Santorini, quieter and less commercial than its famous neighbours. The port at Karavostasis is a modest harbour on the east coast, with buses and taxis running up to the Chora above. That clifftop main town, with its square perched at the edge of a sheer drop, is the reason most people come, along with the walking trails and out-of-the-way beaches.

Sailings run most days in season and often more than once, which makes this an easy pairing of two quiet islands. The current timetable and fares are listed below, with tickets usually starting around four euros. Folegandros also has far better links onward to Piraeus and Santorini than Sikinos does, so it is a useful staging point.

Hiring a car

Do you need a car on Folegandros?

Not essential. Folegandros is small, and the bus that meets every ferry runs the 3.5km from the port at Karavostasis up to Chora in about ten minutes for a couple of euros. A car or scooter becomes useful once you want to reach the beaches below Ano Meria or Agali, which the bus does not serve directly. Rental desks operate in Chora, Karavostasis and Ano Meria; compare prices at Discover Cars.

Do you need to rent a car on Sikinos?

Probably not. Sikinos has just two settlements, the port at Alopronia and Chora 3.5km uphill, linked by an hourly bus. Only two small rental outfits operate on the island, with stock limited in August, so most visitors get by on foot and the bus. If you want the freedom, check Discover Cars.

Tips for the Sikinos to Folegandros ferry

  • Medicines, including seasickness tablets and any prescription drugs, should always be in your day bag, not buried in hold luggage.
  • On routes operated by a single company, focus on choosing the right class of service rather than comparing operators.
  • If your itinerary is time-critical (flight the next day), always choose the conventional slow ferry over the fast catamaran in summer – reliability matters more than speed.
  • In Folegandros, the distinctive hilltop Kastro village and the rugged, sun-bleached landscape give the island a wild character unlike most of the Cyclades. A scenic walk from Ano Meria leads to the lighthouse on the southeastern tip, standing watch over the Aegean since 1919.
