Skiathos to Thessaloniki is the northern exit from the Sporades, operated by Seajets on the fast craft Speedrunner Jet in a little over three hours. It runs up the coast and into the Thermaic Gulf rather than west to Volos, and it is a direct sailing without the usual chain of island calls. All seating is inside.
Thessaloniki is Greece's second city and the boat docks on the central waterfront, so you step off within walking distance of the promenade, the White Tower and the old market district. The city has Roman and Byzantine monuments scattered through the centre, a strong food scene and a large student population that keeps it busy year-round. Trains and coaches run south to Athens and north towards the border, and the airport lies south-east of the city.
