Symi to Fourni takes around ten hours on Blue Star Ferries' Blue Star Patmos, running north from the southern Dodecanese into the waters between Ikaria and Samos. The ship calls at several islands on the way, which accounts for much of the journey time. It is a conventional ferry with cabins, lounges and open decks, so the length is easy enough to absorb.
Fourni is a small archipelago with a fishing tradition far bigger than its size suggests, home to one of the larger fleets in Greece relative to its population. The main port town, also called Fourni, sits in a sheltered bay with tavernas along the harbour front, and the seafood is the obvious thing to eat. Beaches are quiet and undeveloped, and the surrounding waters are well known to archaeologists for the number of ancient wrecks found there.
