Syros to Gavrio takes about three hours on the Artemis of Hellenic Seaways, a conventional ferry working the western Cyclades line that ties Andros, Tinos, Syros and Kea together. It is a modest, unhurried crossing on a ship with deck space and simple seating rather than a fast catamaran. The route is useful because it links islands that are otherwise awkward to combine without going back to the mainland.
Gavrio is the main port of Andros, the northernmost of the Cyclades, and it is more of a gateway than a destination. The harbour is a straightforward working ferry port with cafes along the front and a small beach nearby. Buses run out to Batsi and on to Chora on the east coast, which is where most of the island's sights, beaches and walking trails are.
The service runs about once a week, so it needs planning around carefully; the current timetable and fares are shown below. Fares start around €7.50. If it does not fit, Andros is also reached frequently from Rafina on the mainland.
