Syros to Symi is a very long crossing, around ten and a half hours on the Blue Star 2, taking you from the middle of the Cyclades right down to the southeastern Dodecanese. It is a conventional ferry with cabins, and on a leg like this a berth is worth the extra. The routing calls at several islands on the way, which is what stretches the journey out.
Symi is a small island near Rhodes, and its harbour is the reason most people come. Tiers of colourful neoclassical and Italianate mansions rise up the hillsides around the bay, a legacy of the island's sponge-diving wealth. It is compact and easy to walk, with good seafood along the waterfront and the Panormitis monastery at the southern end of the island.
