Thessaloniki to Patmos is a very long haul down the eastern Aegean, worked by Blue Star Ferries with the Diagoras and taking around twenty-four hours. That is a full day and night aboard with calls at several islands on the way, so a cabin is worth the money. Fares start around €66, and the ship carries vehicles throughout.
Patmos is a Dodecanese island with a quietly upmarket, low-key feel, and the ferry docks at Skala, the port town. Above it, the fortified Monastery of St John the Theologian crowns the Chora hill and dominates the view from the harbour. Along with the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St John is said to have written the Book of Revelation, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage site, which has kept development on the island unusually restrained.
