Samos to Leros is one of the longer legs on the Dodecanese line, four and a quarter to well over six hours from Vathy depending on the sailing. Blue Star Ferries and Superfast Ferries work it with the Diagoras and the Lefka Ori, both big conventional ships with cabins, cafeterias and a car deck. It is a comfortable way to cover the distance, and much of it is spent within sight of the Turkish coast and the smaller islands in between.
Ferries dock at Lakki, a harbour lined with 1930s Italian Rationalist buildings that give the place a look found nowhere else in Greece. Lakki is the port rather than the island's main town, so most arrivals move straight on to Platanos, the beach village of Agia Marina, or the coves below the Castle of Pandeli. Leros stays quiet and largely uncommercial, which is precisely why people choose it.
The route runs two or three times a week, and the longer sailings tend to be the ones with extra calls. Current departure times and fares are listed below, with prices starting in the high thirties in euro. If nothing suits, Patmos is the obvious intermediate stop, with local links onward to Leros.
