Vathy on Samos to Patmos is the standard way of dropping from the eastern Aegean into the Dodecanese, run by Blue Star Ferries and Superfast Ferries with the Diagoras and the Lefka Ori. Crossing time runs from a little under three hours to nearly five, depending on which sailing you take and whether it calls anywhere en route. These are full-size overnight-capable ships, so there is plenty of deck space and a proper seating saloon.
You arrive at Skala, the port town of Patmos, with the fortified Monastery of St John standing on the ridge above the Chora. Patmos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has stayed noticeably low-key for an island of its size, with pilgrims and quieter travellers rather than package crowds. The Cave of the Apocalypse sits on the climb between Skala and the Chora, and the beaches are scattered and unhurried.
Expect two or three departures a week rather than a daily service, so it pays to work the crossing into your route early.
