Volos to Platanias takes between about an hour and forty minutes and just under two hours with Mantoudi Lines on the Zefyros. It runs the length of the Pagasetic Gulf and round to the outer coast of South Pelion, so you get a good look at the peninsula from the water. It is a small operation rather than a mainline ferry, and the boat is modest in size.
Platanias is a small, rural harbour on the South Pelion coast, low-key and traditional rather than a resort. Travellers mostly use it as an alternative jumping-off point for the Sporades, and there is little at the port itself beyond the basics. The wider draw is the Pelion peninsula behind it, with its forested hills and stone villages.
Sailings run most days in season, and the current timetable and fares are shown below. Service here is seasonal and thinner than out of Volos, so check before you build a plan around it. If you need reliability to Skiathos, Skopelos or Alonissos, the Volos departures are the safer bet.
