Chios to Cesme is the short international hop across to the Turkish mainland, taking somewhere between twenty and thirty five minutes. It is run by small passenger boats operated by Makri Travel and Sunrise Lines, the Apostolos S and the Sea Star Makri, and it is the busiest crossing on this stretch of coast. Passports are required and you clear border control at both ends, so allow time either side of the sailing itself.
Cesme is a resort town on the peninsula at Turkey's westernmost Aegean point, an hour or so from Izmir. A well preserved Genoese and Ottoman castle overlooks the harbour in the centre of town, and the ferry terminal is close enough to walk to both. The area is popular for its beaches, windsurfing at Alacati nearby and thermal spas.
