Chios to Piraeus Route Map

Map of the north Aegean showing the ferry route west-south-west from Chios to Piraeus.

Chios to Piraeus is the main artery between the North Aegean and Athens, worked by Hellenic Seaways and Superfast Ferries with the Nissos Samos and the Ariadne. Depending on the ship and the stops it makes, the crossing runs from about seven hours to a little over ten. Most services are overnight, so cabins are worth booking if you want to arrive in Athens having actually slept.

Piraeus is the port of Athens and one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe, a few kilometres southwest of the city centre. North Aegean arrivals dock at the northern end of the harbour, and the port is spread across numbered gates from E1 to E12, so it is worth checking which gate you are landing at before you plan the onward leg. The metro terminus at Piraeus station links straight into central Athens, and there is a bus link to the airport.

The route runs most days in season, often with a choice of departure. Current timetables and fares are listed below. Piraeus is also where you would change for the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese if Chios is only the first part of a longer trip.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Piraeus?

Yes, several agencies meet passengers directly at the ferry gates (E1 to E12), so there is no need to arrange transport into central Athens first. It suits travellers continuing on to the mainland rather than islanders, since central Athens is only 20 minutes away and has good metro and bus links. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Can you rent a car in Chios?

Yes, and the ferry dock sits right in Chios Town itself, with rental offices a short walk away or at the airport 3-4km south. A car makes sense if you want to reach the Mastic villages in the south or Kambos's walled citrus groves, since buses run less frequently outside town; compare prices at Discover Cars.

  • Passports or national identity cards are required for all passengers on domestic Greek ferry routes – carry yours in your day bag, not buried in your hold luggage.
  • Always cross-check your ticket details – date, vessel name, passenger count, and vehicle details – before the cancellation window closes.
  • Port areas in Greek islands are compact but busy on arrival; have your onward transport or accommodation address noted so you can move quickly.
  • Ferries from Piraeus depart from the main port of Athens, giving easy access to the Acropolis, the world-class Acropolis Museum, and the ancient Agora. The historic Plaka neighbourhood at the foot of the Acropolis hill, with its neoclassical lanes, Roman ruins, and traditional tavernas, is the most atmospheric place to spend time before or after your crossing.
