Eretria Ferry Port: Evia Port Guide for the Oropos Crossing

Eretria is a small port on the west coast of Evia, and its ferry to Oropos in Attica is the sea alternative to driving round to this part of the island via Chalkida.

Eretria sits on the shore of the South Euboean Gulf, directly across the water from the Attica coast. One of the main guides we read says the town can be reached either by ferry from Skala Oropou in Attica or by road via Chalkida. The official tourism site describes Eretria as having a small harbour, a marina, beaches and a seafront promenade. The only scheduled ferry route we found a source for from this port is the crossing to Oropos, which this guide covers. Two companies share it, so there is a sailing about every half hour.

Where Exactly Is Eretria Port?

Eretria is on the central west coast of Evia. By road it is 21.4 km from Chalkida, the island's capital, which the tourism site gives as about 24 minutes' drive. From Athens, the same site gives 93.7 km and about 1 hour 33 minutes by the road route via the Chalkida bridge, which is the journey the ferry lets you avoid.

The ferry dock is mapped on OpenStreetMap on the waterfront at the foot of Artemidos Amarysias street. In a straight line it is about 230 m from the town hall, and the marina is about 750 m to the south-east. These are map distances, so allow longer on foot.

The Eretria to Oropos Ferry

The ferry connects Eretria with Skala Oropou, the port of the town of Oropos in Attica. Two operators run it all year round. Tsokos Lines uses red ferries and Oropos-Eretria Ferries (the other operator, whose website is ferrieseretriaoropos.gr) uses white ones. Their timetables fit together: Tsokos Lines leaves Oropos on the hour and Eretria at half past, while the white ferries leave Eretria on the hour and Oropos at half past. In summer that gives a ferry about every half hour between 07:00 and 20:00, in our experience. Winter hours are shorter, but the route keeps running through the year.

Which ships are running is clearer for one company than for the other. Tsokos Lines' own October 2026 timetable poster is headed with the ship name Protoporos XVIII, and its website embeds a live tracker for IMO 1016953, which the MarineLink vessel database lists as PROTOPOROS XVIII, with an Eretria call listed on 18 October 2026 (ship-tracking data with partial coverage). The notice on the Tsokos Lines booth at Oropos, in the photo under Tickets and Fares, names the Protoporos XIII, but that photo is undated, and a ship-history website says the Protoporos XIII moved to the Perama-Salamina line in 2024. MarineLink shows the Protoporos XVII calling only at Perama and Paloukia up to 21 October 2026. The Oropos-Eretria Ferries About page, which is undated, names its ferry as the "Anna Maria" and says it carries cars, motorbikes and trucks of various sizes as well as foot passengers, and the ship-history website lists the Anna Maria's current line as Oropos-Eretria.

Timetables

Both operators publish their timetables online, and what we could read covers October 2026 only. We read both on 24 October 2026.

Tsokos Lines (red ferries). The company's own website, tsokoslines.gr, carries an announcement dated 1 October 2026 for a new winter timetable, and its poster for it is valid from 1 to 31 October 2026. Departures from Eretria are at half past the hour and from Oropos on the hour:

| Day | From Eretria, first to last | From Oropos, first to last | Sailings each way | |---|---|---|---| | Monday to Thursday | 06:30 to 18:30 | 07:00 to 19:00 | 13 | | Friday | 06:30 to 19:30 | 07:00 to 20:00 | 14 | | Saturday | 07:30 to 18:30 | 08:00 to 19:00 | 12 | | Sunday | 07:30 to 19:30 | 08:00 to 20:00 | 13 |

The poster prints the midday departure from Eretria as 12:35, while the Greek and English pages of the website show 12:30. We could not find which is right, so check this sailing on the day with Tsokos Lines on +30 2229061322. The English page also carries a different, undated table with later last sailings (as late as 21:30 from Eretria and 22:00 from Oropos), which matches neither the Greek page nor the poster, so we have not used it. Tsokos Lines has not published times beyond 31 October 2026 on the pages we read, and says schedule changes are posted on its Facebook page, which we did not read.

Oropos-Eretria Ferries (white ferries). This operator publishes a calendar, one day at a time, with separate calendars for departures from Eretria and from Oropos. The calendars for August (past), November and December 2026 showed no sailings, so check its page for the month you want. This is a summary of the October 2026 calendar, not a standing timetable. Departures from Eretria:

| Day | First | Last | Sailings | |---|---|---|---| | Monday | 07:00 | 18:00 | 12 | | Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday | 07:00 | 19:00 | 13 | | Friday | 07:00 | 20:00 | 14 | | Sunday | 08:00 | 20:00 | 13 |

The white ferries leave Eretria on the hour, except for one at 12:05 each day. From Oropos they leave at half past the hour: the first is at 07:30 every day, and the last is 18:30 on Mondays, 19:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and 20:30 on Fridays and Sundays. The Oropos calendar has a few small gaps on individual days (for example no 08:30 sailing on 4, 11 and 18 October, and none on 28 October), so look up the exact date before you rely on a particular sailing.

Both companies together. Putting the two October 2026 timetables side by side (our own combination), the first and last departures from each port are:

| Day | From Eretria, first to last | From Oropos, first to last | |---|---|---| | Monday | 06:30 to 18:30 | 07:00 to 19:00 | | Tuesday to Thursday | 06:30 to 19:00 | 07:00 to 19:30 | | Friday | 06:30 to 20:00 | 07:00 to 20:30 | | Saturday | 07:00 to 19:00 | 07:30 to 19:30 | | Sunday | 07:30 to 20:00 | 07:30 to 20:30 |

How long is the crossing?

Tsokos Lines' website says the crossing takes 20 minutes. The Oropos-Eretria Ferries pages we read give no crossing time. On my own crossings it took about 25 minutes. Boarding is quick and the ferry turns round in about 5 minutes. Two outside sources, an undated travel guide and a 2018 ferry enthusiast's trip report, both say around 20 minutes. Allow 20 to 25 minutes.

On board

In my experience both ships follow a similar design: a single vehicle deck, and up two flights of stairs an indoor seating area with a cafe and toilets, plus some seats outside. Getting off is as quick as getting on.

Cars, motorbikes and bicycles all use the single vehicle deck, and unloading is quick.

Getting to Eretria Port

By road. Eretria is on Evia, so a driver from Athens either takes the ferry from Oropos or drives round via Chalkida (figures above).

By bus from Chalkida or Athens. KTEL Evia's Monday to Friday timetable PDFs, uploaded in September 2026, list an Eretria to Chalkida line and a Chalkida to Eretria line. The Eretria departures start at 06:20 and the last is at 20:20. The Chalkida departures start at 07:00 and the last is at 20:15, with the 11:15 marked as running only from 15 June to 31 October 2026. The same PDFs list Athens to Eretria and Eretria to Athens services, some marked with a connection at Chalkida (our reading of the abbreviation). These go round by road, not over the sea. We did not read the Saturday or Sunday timetables. KTEL Evia's contact page lists an Eretria agency on 22290 60006, but its published timetables do not say where in Eretria the buses stop. I didn't notice a bus stop or a KTEL sign at the ferry dock myself.

Foot passengers. The Oropos-Eretria Ferries About page says foot passengers can use local bus services on arrival at either Oropos or Eretria. Apart from the Chalkida and Athens services described above, the Monday to Friday sheets show no other Eretria line, and none of the services is described as timed to meet the ferry.

Taxis. No page we read describes a taxi rank at Eretria port, and none is mapped on OpenStreetMap within 2.5 km. I didn't notice any taxis waiting when I landed, so if you need one, arrange it in advance.

Getting to the ferry at Oropos

Skala Oropou is about 50 km from central Athens by our reckoning, roughly an hour's drive. Other sources give different distances, so use a map for your own route. There is no train to Oropos. Public transport is by KTEL Attikis buses, which leave Athens from Pedion Areos (Mavromateon and Ioulianou streets, near Victoria station). The Greek timetable page on the KTEL Attikis website, updated 16 October 2026 and marked valid from 7 October 2026, every day, lists Athens departures at 08:00, 12:20, 15:00, 16:45 and 19:30, and departures towards Athens at 05:35 (not Saturday or Sunday), 06:35 (Saturday and Sunday only), 10:30, 14:45, 17:45 and 21:30. Some return buses start at Agioi Apostoloi, Malakasa or Markopoulo, so the time at Skala Oropou itself may be later than the printed one. An older English page on the same site (updated October 2025) lists more departures and disagrees with the Greek page, so we have used the newer Greek one. The fare list (November 2024) gives Athens to Skala Oropou as €4.80, and KTEL gives no journey time. The KTEL stops list (December 2023) includes a "Ferry Boat (Skala Oropou)" stop and a terminus at Skala Oropou; the stop is mapped about 140 to 150 m west of the ferry terminal in a straight line.

Since 19 April 2026 the OASA city bus 510 (Zirineio in Kifisia, Markopoulo, Skala Oropou) also ends at the port. Its winter timetable runs Monday to Saturday from Zirineio at 06:30, 14:40 and 16:25 and from Oropos at 06:30, 08:00, 16:10 and 18:00, taking about 65 to 76 minutes. On Sunday it runs from Zirineio at 10:35 and 15:45 and from Oropos at 11:50 and 16:00 (Sunday times and card payment from an April 2026 news report). It accepts bank cards on board.

KTEL Attikis has a small kiosk at Skala Oropou, shown below. The sign on it gives a phone number for the Oropos station, 22950 32 216, which matches the number on the Oropos municipality's access page, and one for the Athens station, 210 880 8000.

I cycled from Athens to Skala Oropou with a fully loaded touring bicycle. It took just over three hours, and there are a few hills on the way.

Port Facilities

Eretria's tourism description and the Oropos-Eretria Ferries Eretria page both say the seafront has cafés, restaurants and tavernas overlooking the water, with fresh fish a local speciality. Neither says which of them are at the ferry dock.

At the Eretria dock:

  • Toilets: none at the port itself. Use one of the cafes nearby, or the toilets on board.
  • Waiting room or shelter: none at the port. The cafes nearby are the place to wait.
  • Café or kiosk at the dock: OpenStreetMap maps two kiosks and Cafe Plus within about 100 m of the ferry dock, a tavern and a grill within about 60 m, and more restaurants and cafes within about 250 m. Opening times are not known.
  • Cash machines nearby: the nearest one mapped is a National Bank machine about 420 m north of the dock in a straight line. A Piraeus Bank branch is mapped about 340 m away, tagged as open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 14:00. Neither is at the dock.
  • Luggage storage: none that we know of.

On the Oropos side there is a small, uncovered waiting area at the port, with a kiosk and cafes close by for a last snack. On board, each ship has toilets and a cafe (see On board above).

Parking

At Eretria, OpenStreetMap maps several surfaced car parks 380 to 460 m in a straight line from the ferry dock, one of them tagged free and open to all (about 430 m to the south-west). None is described as ferry parking, and we found no published charges or capacity. At Oropos, the municipality says that each settlement has its own municipal car park (page undated), but we found no description of parking at the port itself.

Tickets and Fares

There is no online booking for this crossing. The Tsokos Lines website has timetable, price and contact information but no booking page, and Oropos-Eretria Ferries says tickets are sold at its ticket offices in the ports of Oropos and Eretria on the day of travel. At Oropos, in my experience, you buy your ticket at a small booth at Skala Oropou when you arrive. Oropos-Eretria Ferries advises pre-booking for busy periods such as Easter, Christmas and New Year, and lists two mobile numbers for enquiries and reservations: +30 6932 201374 and +30 6945 891326. Tsokos Lines lists +30 2229061322, which matches the information number on its booth at Oropos.

The red booth in the photo belongs to Tsokos Lines. The booths have taken cards for me, but I still suggest carrying cash just in case. Oropos-Eretria Ferries says it has ticket offices in both ports. Tsokos Lines gives its location only as the port of Oropos or Eretria, and its phone number has the Eretria area code (22290). Opening hours for the ticket offices are not published. At Eretria, as at Oropos, you buy your ticket at a booth at the port. There are only two booths, one for each company: I just went to whichever was open and got a ticket for its ferry, which was usually the next one to leave.

The two price lists agree. Both were fetched on 24 October 2026, and neither page is dated (the Tsokos Lines page carries its 1 October 2026 announcement):

| Ticket | Tsokos Lines | Oropos-Eretria Ferries | |---|---|---| | Adult | €3.00 | €3.00 | | Reduced or half fare | €1.50 (50%, for eligible passengers) | €1.50 | | Motorbike | €3.00 (listed as without rider) | €3.00 | | Car with driver | €10.00 (one vehicle plus one driver) | €7.00 for the car and €3.00 for the driver, €10.00 together (our sum) | | Taxi | €7.00 (with driver) | €7.00 |

On our own trips an adult one-way ticket cost €3.00, and cars and motorbikes cost extra. Neither list says who counts as eligible for the reduced fare, what a car price covers beyond one driver, or whether trucks or other vehicles are charged. Tsokos Lines lists the motorbike at €3.00 "without rider", which suggests the rider pays the €3.00 passenger fare as well (€6.00 in all); this is our reading, so confirm at the booth. Neither list gives a price for extra passengers in a car; the only per-person price is €3.00. Neither price list mentions bicycles. My bicycle travelled free on both of my trips, but two visitor tips on a cycling site from 2025 differ: one (June) says "3 Euro for person and bicycle", which is ambiguous, and the other (October) says €3 per person and bikes free. A map tag on the Oropos port on OpenStreetMap gives €3 for a bicycle (undated). Check with the booth.

Eretria Itself

The town has a campsite, a number of hotels, supermarkets for stocking up before heading to quieter parts of Evia, and plenty of places to eat and drink. I suggest the museum and the archaeological sites for people who stop in town. On OpenStreetMap, straight-line distances from the ferry dock are: the Baths at the Harbour archaeological site about 280 m; supermarkets about 280 to 420 m; chemists from about 140 m; the Archaeological Museum about 720 m (mapped as open Tuesday to Sunday 08:00 to 15:00, not checked with the museum); the ancient theatre about 970 m; and the archaeological park about 1 km.

Practical Tips

  • At either port, turn up about 20 minutes before you want to sail. The ferries are so frequent that you either get lucky and board one straight away, or you take the next.
  • Carry some cash for the ticket booth.
  • Do not look for an online booking: we found none for either company, and our own notes say tickets are bought at the port.
  • Both timetables we read are for October 2026 only. Check both companies' current times for the month you travel, particularly after 31 October 2026 and in winter, when hours are shorter than the summer 07:00 to 20:00 pattern.
  • Red Tsokos Lines ferries leave Oropos on the hour and Eretria at half past. White Oropos-Eretria Ferries ships leave Eretria on the hour (with one at 12:05) and Oropos at half past.
  • At Easter, Christmas and New Year, Oropos-Eretria Ferries advises booking ahead by phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a ferry from Eretria to Oropos?

Yes. Two companies run a car and passenger ferry between Eretria on Evia and Oropos in Attica: Tsokos Lines, with red ferries, and Oropos-Eretria Ferries, with white ones. It runs throughout the year.

How often does the Eretria to Oropos ferry run?

In summer there is a ferry about every half hour between 07:00 and 20:00, because each company sails once an hour and the two are offset by half an hour. Winter hours are shorter. In October 2026 the first departures were 06:30 from Eretria and 07:00 from Oropos on most days, and the last were between 18:30 and 20:30 depending on the day and port.

How much is the Eretria to Oropos ferry?

On both companies' price lists, fetched on 24 October 2026, an adult ticket is €3.00 and a reduced fare is €1.50. A motorbike is €3.00, a taxi is €7.00, and a car with its driver is €10.00 in total.

Can I take a car on the ferry?

Yes. Both ships have a vehicle deck, and Oropos-Eretria Ferries says its ferry carries cars, motorbikes and trucks of various sizes.

Can I take a bicycle on the ferry?

Yes. My bicycle travelled free on both of my trips. The price lists we read have no bicycle fare, so check if you need to be sure.

Can I book the ferry online?

We found no online booking for this crossing, from either company. You buy tickets at the port, at the booth at Skala Oropou in the case of Oropos. Oropos-Eretria Ferries recommends pre-booking by phone for Easter, Christmas and New Year.

How long does the crossing take?

Tsokos Lines says 20 minutes. My crossings took about 25 minutes, with a quick turn-round at each port, and other sources say around 20 minutes.

How do I get from Eretria to Chalkida?

By road it is 21.4 km, about 24 minutes by car according to the tourism site. KTEL Evia's Monday to Friday timetable also lists buses between Eretria and Chalkida.

Is there parking at Eretria port?

OpenStreetMap maps several car parks about 400 m from the ferry dock, one of them tagged free and open to all, but none is described as ferry parking and we found no published charges.
