Oropos Ferry Port: Skala Oropou Port Guide
Oropos, also called Skala Oropou, is the Attica port for the short car and passenger ferry across the South Euboean Gulf to Eretria on the island of Evia.
The port belongs to the municipality of Oropos in East Attica. Wikipedia describes Skala Oropou as a seaside community on the South Euboean Gulf that is part of the Athens metropolitan area. Only one crossing is covered here: Oropos to Eretria. The guide draws on my first-hand experience (I have cycled to the port from Athens and crossed with my bicycle), on the published information of Tsokos Lines (tsokoslines.gr), and on that of the other operator (ferrieseretriaoropos.gr). Anything that could not be confirmed is marked.
Where Exactly Is Oropos Port?
The ferry leaves from the waterfront of Skala Oropou, the coastal part of the Oropos municipality. Sources disagree on how far it is from central Athens, so treat every figure as approximate:
- I put it at about 50 km from the centre of Athens, roughly an hour by car.
- The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr says 38 km north of Athens.
- Wikipedia gives 55 km north of the city centre, but for the inland town of Oropos, which it places 4 km south of the coast.
None of these is a measured driving distance. On OpenStreetMap the ferry terminal is mapped on the seafront road Kyanis Aktis, in the middle of the Skala Oropou waterfront. In a straight line, the bus terminus is mapped about 150 m to the west, the taxi rank about 65 m to the west and the Plateia Iroon (Heroes' Square) bus stop about 230 m to the east. Cars wait in the small parking area in front of the boarding area.
The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr says a long coastal road runs along the town, with tavernas and cafes beside the water, and that there are beaches nearby.
Ferries from Oropos to Eretria
Two companies share this crossing, and I tell the ships apart by colour: Tsokos Lines runs the red ferries and a second company, which I call Oropos-Eretria Ferries, runs the white ones. Each company sails from Oropos once an hour, on alternating half hours, so in practice there is a departure about every half hour. A notice on the Tsokos Lines booth, which I photographed in 2023, gives its Oropos departures as every hour exactly.

The service runs all year. In summer, as I know it, sailings run between about 07:00 and 20:00, and the hours are shorter in winter.
Tsokos Lines timetable
Tsokos Lines announced a new winter timetable on its website on 1 October 2026: from Oropos on the hour, from Eretria on the half hour. Its timetable poster for the ferry shows validity from 1 to 31 October 2026 only, and lists these first and last sailings, with a departure every hour (Oropos) or every half past the hour (Eretria) in between:
| Days | From Oropos (on the hour) | From Eretria (on the half hour) | |---|---|---| | Monday to Thursday | 07:00 to 19:00 | 06:30 to 18:30 | | Friday | 07:00 to 20:00 | 06:30 to 19:30 | | Saturday | 08:00 to 19:00 | 07:30 to 18:30 | | Sunday | 08:00 to 20:00 | 07:30 to 19:30 |
Two things to know about this table:
- The printed poster shows 12:35 for the midday departure from Eretria on every day, while the same table on the Tsokos website shows 12:30. All other times agree.
- The English version of the Tsokos website carries a different, undated table with later sailings: the last from Oropos at 21:00 Monday to Thursday and 22:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It looks like an earlier timetable that was not updated, but the page does not say. The Greek page and the poster agree with each other and are dated October 2026.
Tsokos Lines has not published times beyond 31 October 2026 on the pages we read. We could not find which of 12:30 and 12:35 is right for the midday sailing from Eretria, so check that sailing on the day with Tsokos Lines on +30 2229061322. The website says schedule changes are posted on its Facebook page, which we did not read. The Oropos municipality's access page (undated) says the ferry runs about hourly in winter, which is not a timetable.
As I understand it, the other company's sailings from Oropos fall on the half hours between these. Its website, ferrieseretriaoropos.gr, says its service runs throughout the year, carries cars, motorbikes and trucks of various sizes as well as foot passengers, and has connections every hour in each direction. The site is branded "Oropos-Eretria Ferries", and the Oropos municipality's access page (undated) lists "Oropos-Eretria Ferries" with the same mobile number (6932 201374), so I take it to be the white ferry company I describe here. A ship-history website describes its ferry, the Anna Maria, as all white. Its timetable page has an online calendar for departures from each port, and the times show only once you pick a date. We read the October 2026 calendar on 24 October 2026. Departures from Oropos are at half past the hour: Monday 07:30 to 18:30; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 07:30 to 19:30; Friday and Sunday 07:30 to 20:30. There are a few gaps on individual days, so look up the exact date. The calendars for November and December 2026 showed no sailings when we read them.
Which ship
Tsokos Lines' poster is headed with the ferry name Protoporos XVIII, and the company's website embeds a live tracker for IMO 1016953, which the MarineLink vessel database lists as PROTOPOROS XVIII, with an Eretria call listed on 18 October 2026 (ship-tracking data with partial coverage). So the Protoporos XVIII appears to be the ship now sailing the crossing. The booth notice in my 2023 photograph shows Protoporos XIII, but a ship-history website says Protoporos XIII moved to the Perama-Salamina line in 2024. The same website says that Protoporos XVII, placed on the Oropos line in 2024, moved to Perama-Salamina in 2026, and MarineLink shows it calling only at Perama and Paloukia up to 21 October 2026.
Crossing time
Tsokos Lines says the crossing takes 20 minutes. I found it takes about 25 minutes. An undated travel guide also says around 20 minutes, and a hotel's destination page in Eretria says a half-hour ferry ride. Allow 25 minutes and expect small differences.
On board
In my experience both ships have a similar layout: one vehicle deck, then, up two flights of stairs, an indoor seating area with a cafe and toilets, plus seats outside in the open air. Boarding is quick and the ship turns round in about five minutes, so there is little time spent waiting at either end. Getting off is just as fast.

Getting to Oropos Port
From Athens by car
In my experience it takes about an hour to drive from central Athens. The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr says the port is easy to reach by car and is very close to Athens and to Athens International Airport. The Oropos municipality says on its access page (undated) that the area is reached from the Athens to Lamia national road, using the Malakasa junction (either direction), the Markopoulo junction (towards Lamia), the Afidnes junction (towards Lamia) or the Kapandriti junction (towards Athens). OASA, the Athens bus authority, describes its 510 bus route as leaving the national road along the Malakasa to Markopoulo provincial road, then taking the Amfiareiou to Chalkoutsi road and on to the seafront road at Skala Oropou, about 38 km from Zirineio in Kifisia.
From Athens by bus
No trains run to Oropos. KTEL Attikis (Attica) runs the suburban coach network that serves the Oropos area, and my photograph shows a KTEL Attikis kiosk at Skala Oropou. The sign on it gives 22950 32 216 as the number for the Oropos station office.

Earlier information on the Athens end is dated or patchy:
- An undated Athens travel guide says buses to Oropos leave from the Pedion Areos stop on Alexandras Avenue.
- A news item dated 26 July 2021 says the departure point for the Oropos line stayed at Pedion Areos, near Victoria station, when other KTEL Attikis lines moved to Nomismatokopio.
- An undated Greece travel guide says the author could not work out the KTEL schedules to Oropos.
Pedion Areos is still the stated departure point: the KTEL Attikis Greek timetable page (updated 16 October 2026) and the Oropos municipality's access page (undated) both name it, and KTEL puts it at Mavromateon and Ioulianou streets. The timetable is marked valid from 7 October 2026, every day. Athens departures are at 08:00, 12:20, 15:00, 16:45 and 19:30, and departures towards Athens are at 05:35 (not Saturday or Sunday), 06:35 (Saturday and Sunday only), 10:30, 14:45, 17:45 and 21:30. Some return buses start at Agioi Apostoloi, Malakasa or Markopoulo, so the time at Skala Oropou itself may be later than the printed one. An older English page on the same site (updated October 2025) lists more departures and disagrees with the Greek page, so we have used the newer Greek one. The fare from Athens is €4.80 (price list of November 2024), and KTEL gives no journey time. A KTEL "Ferry Boat (Skala Oropou)" stop and a terminus at Skala Oropou are listed in its stops list of December 2023; the stop is mapped about 140 to 150 m west of the ferry terminal in a straight line. KTEL Attikis's main phone line is 210 88 08 000.
A second option is new. Since 19 April 2026 the OASA city bus 510 (Zirineio in Kifisia, Markopoulo, Skala Oropou) also ends at the port. Its winter timetable runs Monday to Saturday from Zirineio at 06:30, 14:40 and 16:25 and from Oropos at 06:30, 08:00, 16:10 and 18:00, taking about 65 to 76 minutes. On Sunday it runs from Zirineio at 10:35 and 15:45 and from Oropos at 11:50 and 16:00 (Sunday times and card payment from an April 2026 news report). It accepts bank cards on board.
The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr says there are frequent bus services to Oropos, without naming a line or giving times, and that foot passengers arriving at either port can use the local buses.
From Athens by taxi
A taxi from Athens can be arranged in advance; my page points to Welcome Pickups for this. A taxi rank is mapped on OpenStreetMap about 65 m from the ferry terminal, and the Oropos municipality's access page (undated) gives a number for the Skala Oropou taxi stand, 22950 31150. Ask the booking company for a fixed price from Athens.
By bicycle
I cycled from Athens to Skala Oropou on a loaded touring bicycle in just over three hours, and there are some hills on the way. That is one person's ride on one day, not a route guide.
Facilities at Oropos Port
- Ticket booth. Tickets are sold from a booth at the port (see below). The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr also says it has ticket offices in the ports of Oropos and Eretria.
- Waiting area. There is a small waiting area at the port, but it is not covered. The cafes nearby are the better place to wait.
- Food and drink. A kiosk and cafes are close to the port for last-minute snacks, in my experience. The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr adds that tavernas and cafes line the waterfront road.
- Toilets. There are none at the port itself, so use a cafe nearby. The ships have toilets on board.
- Cash machines and luggage. The nearest cash machines mapped on OpenStreetMap are a Eurobank one about 260 m east of the ferry terminal and a National Bank one about 540 m east, with a Piraeus Bank branch about 120 m away (all straight-line distances, undated map data).
Parking and Vehicles
Both ships carry vehicles on a single vehicle deck. I found that cars and motorbikes pay extra, while my bicycle travelled free on both of my trips.

The Oropos municipality says each settlement has its own municipal car park (page undated), but we found no page that names a car park for the ferry. On OpenStreetMap, four single parking spaces are mapped 80 to 170 m west of the ferry terminal near the bus stop, and the nearest mapped car parks are about 790 m east and about 1 km away. There is a small parking area in front of the boarding area, where cars wait to board. No charges are published. Parking and access near the port may change: the municipality signed a contract on 8 September 2026 to redevelop the Skala Oropou to Nea Palatia seafront, with a new road layout, marked parking zones and a new promenade, and works are due to start in October 2026.
Tickets and Fares
Tickets for this crossing cannot be booked online through Ferryscanner, which handles many other Greek routes. You simply buy your ticket at a booth at Skala Oropou when you arrive. The booths have taken cards for me, but I still suggest carrying cash just in case. There are only two booths, one for each company: go to whichever is open and you get a ticket for its ferry, which is usually the next one to leave.
The Tsokos Lines website has no online booking page. It gives its location as the port of Oropos or Eretria and its phone number as +30 2229061322, the same digits as on the booth notice in my photograph. The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr says tickets are sold at its ticket offices on the day of travel, and advises pre-booking for busy periods such as Easter, Christmas and New Year. Its website invites you to call to reserve and lists two numbers, +30 6932 201374 and +30 6945 891326.
Tsokos Lines fares
The Tsokos Lines price list (the page carries no date, but sits beside the 1 October 2026 announcement; checked 24 October 2026):
| Ticket | Price | |---|---| | Passenger | €3.00 | | Passenger, reduced (50%) | €1.50 | | Motorbike (without the rider) | €3.00 | | Car with one driver | €10.00 | | Private taxi, with driver | €7.00 |
The list says the reduced fare (€1.50, 50%) is for eligible passengers but does not say who qualifies. It does not list trucks, bicycles or return tickets. It prices the motorbike "without the rider", so the rider presumably pays the €3.00 passenger fare as well (our reading; confirm at the booth). My report of €3.00 for an adult one way matches the passenger price.
Fares at the other operator
The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr has its own price list, checked on 24 October 2026 (the page carries no date):
| Ticket | Price | |---|---| | Adult | €3.00 | | Half fare | €1.50 | | Car | €7.00 | | Driver | €3.00 | | Motorcycle | €3.00 | | Taxi | €7.00 |
The passenger, half-fare, motorbike and taxi prices are the same as on the Tsokos Lines list. The car and driver lines add up to €10.00, the Tsokos price for a car with one driver, so adding the two lines gives the same price, although that operator does not say they are added together. I paid €3.00 for an adult one way, and a map tag on the Oropos port on OpenStreetMap also shows €3 per person and €7 per car (undated).
Practical Tips
- Turn up about 20 minutes before you want to sail. The ferries are so frequent that you either get lucky and board one straight away, or you take the next.
- Carry some cash.
- Either colour of ferry will do. The two companies alternate, so the next sailing is usually the one to take.
- The Tsokos poster covers October 2026 only, so check the Tsokos Lines website or Facebook page for changes, and the other operator's online timetable for your date.
- If you travel at Easter, Christmas or New Year, the operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr advises booking ahead.
- The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr says the town is on the site of ancient Oropos, and that the Sanctuary and Oracle of Amphiaraos, used until the 4th century AD, is in the area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a ferry from Oropos to Eretria?
Yes. Two companies share the crossing all year, Tsokos Lines (red ferries, from Oropos on the hour) and a second operator (white ferries, on the half hours, as I describe it). That gives a sailing about every half hour in summer, with shorter hours in winter.
What time is the first and last ferry from Oropos?
Tsokos Lines' October 2026 timetable has its first sailing from Oropos at 07:00 (08:00 on Saturday and Sunday) and its last at 19:00 Monday to Thursday and Saturday, or 20:00 on Friday and Sunday. The other company's October calendar has sailings from Oropos on the half hour, from 07:30 every day until 18:30 on Monday, 19:30 Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday, and 20:30 on Friday and Sunday. Neither company had published times from November when we checked.
How much is the Oropos to Eretria ferry?
Tsokos Lines lists €3.00 for a passenger, €1.50 reduced, €3.00 for a motorbike without rider, €10.00 for a car with one driver and €7.00 for a private taxi. The other operator's list shows an adult at €3.00, a half fare at €1.50, a car at €7.00, a driver at €3.00, a motorcycle at €3.00 and a taxi at €7.00. Both lists are undated, checked 24 October 2026. I report 3.00 euro for an adult one way, and a bicycle travelled free.
Can I take a car or a bicycle on the Oropos ferry?
Yes. Both ships have a single vehicle deck. Cars and motorbikes cost extra and a bicycle went free on my trips.
Where do I buy tickets, and can I book online?
At the ticket booth at Skala Oropou when you arrive. The crossing cannot be booked online through Ferryscanner, and the Tsokos Lines website has no booking page. Cash is the safer bet. The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr also takes telephone reservations and advises booking for Easter, Christmas and New Year.
How long does the crossing take?
Tsokos Lines says 20 minutes. My crossings took about 25 minutes.
How early should I be at the port?
About 20 minutes before you want to sail. With a ferry about every half hour, you either board one straight away or take the next.
Is there a train to Oropos?
No. Buses (KTEL Attikis), taxis and driving are the options from Athens.
Is Oropos the same as Skala Oropou?
For ferry purposes, yes. The operator at ferrieseretriaoropos.gr calls the port town Skala Oropou, and Wikipedia describes Skala Oropou as the central port of the area. The municipality of Oropos is larger, and the inland town of Oropos is a separate place.
