Pythagorio to Patmos Route Map

Map of the Aegean showing the ferry route south-west from Pythagorio to Patmos.

Pythagorio to Patmos is one of the busier links off the south coast of Samos, run by Dodekanisos Seaways on the fast Dodekanisos Pride and by SAOS Ferries on the conventional Saonisos. The catamaran does it in about an hour and a half, while the slower ship, calling at Agathonissi and Arki along the way, takes up to three hours or so. It is the natural first step from Samos into the Dodecanese.

Boats dock at Skala, Patmos's port, with the Chora and the fortified Monastery of St John on the hill above. The monastery and the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St John is said to have written the Book of Revelation, are UNESCO-listed and are what most visitors come for. That protected status has kept development low-key for an island of this profile, and there are quiet beaches within easy reach of Skala.

Between the two operators the route runs most days in season, with fares starting around €15. Current departures, journey times and prices are shown below. Patmos is well connected onward down the Dodecanese to Lipsi, Leros, Kalymnos and Kos.

Hiring a car

Do you need a car in Patmos?

Not essential, but useful if you want to reach quieter beaches beyond Chora and Grikos at your own pace. Rental desks sit right at Skala port, and buses from the same stop run to Chora, Grikos and Kambos around six times a day, with taxis filling the gaps. Roads are well maintained and quiet, so driving is easy. Compare suppliers at Discover Cars.

Can you rent a car in Pythagorio?

Yes, several agencies have offices right in Pythagorio, and more are based just 3km away at Samos airport on the same south coast, about a 10-minute taxi ride apart. A car is worth having to reach the north coast and inland villages, since bus coverage on Samos is limited outside the main towns. Compare local prices at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Pythagorio to Patmos ferry

  • Evening arrivals into a lit island harbour are particularly beautiful; consider timing a crossing to arrive at dusk if the schedule allows.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent are both considerably cheaper at a supermarket before you board than at island resort shops; stock up on the mainland.
  • Once you arrive in Patmos, the UNESCO-protected old town of Hora and the imposing Monastery of Saint John the Theologian – built in the 11th century – dominate the hilltop above the port. The Cave of the Apocalypse, where Saint John is said to have written the Book of Revelation, is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites in the world.
