Agia Roumeli to Gavdos is a two-and-a-half-hour open-sea crossing on the ANENDYK vessel Samaria, heading south away from Crete's coast into the Libyan Sea. It is a very different proposition from the short coastal hops on this line, and swell can be significant. There is limited shelter on deck, so bring sun cover and water.
The landing is at Karave, Gavdos's small harbour, from which transport runs up to the beaches and the handful of settlements inland. The island is continental Europe's southernmost point, largely undeveloped, and known for pine woods, empty beaches and a long-running camping culture. Facilities are thin, so arriving self-sufficient makes life easier.
This particular sailing runs only occasionally, a couple of times a fortnight at most in season, and weather cancellations are routine. Current departures and fares are shown in the table below. Paleochora and Chora Sfakion offer more frequent Gavdos services, and it is worth leaving spare days around any return leg.
