Paleochora is the main jumping-off point for Gavdos, and the crossing takes between three and a half and four and a quarter hours on the ANENDYK vessel Samaria. It is open sea the whole way, heading south into the Libyan Sea, and the ride can be rough when the wind gets up. The boat is a conventional ferry and carries vehicles as well as foot passengers.
