It is a long crossing, in the region of fifteen to eighteen hours, and most sailings call at Igoumenitsa or Corfu on the way south, which accounts for the spread in journey times. Sami is Kefallonia's main ferry port, a relaxed harbour town on the island's east coast backed by green hills and largely rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake. The Melissani and Drogarati caves are close by and are the usual first stop for arrivals with a car. From Sami there are onward boats to Patra and across to Ithaki, and roads over the island to Argostoli and the west-coast beaches.

The route runs roughly daily at the height of the season and much less often outside it, so check dates carefully before committing. If nothing suits, sailing to Patra and taking the domestic boat across to Sami is the usual alternative.
