Patra to Sami Route Map

Map of the Ionian Islands showing the ferry route west from Patra to Sami.

Patra to Sami is the main link between the northern Peloponnese and Kefallonia, run by Levante Ferries aboard the Kefalonia. The crossing takes about three hours, heading out through the Gulf of Patras and north into the Ionian, and fares start around €15. It is a conventional ferry taking vehicles as well as foot passengers.

Sami sits on the east coast of Kefallonia, the largest of the Ionian islands, and is a relaxed harbour town backed by green hills. It was largely rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake, so the architecture is more modern than you might expect. The Melissani and Drogarati caves are both close by and are the usual first stop for anyone arriving with a car.

Sailings run roughly daily in season. The current timetable and fares are shown below. Sami is Kefallonia's principal ferry port, with further connections across to Ithaki, while Poros and Argostoli on the same island handle the Kyllini services.

Hiring a car

Can you rent a car in Patra?

Yes, the port is within walking distance of Patra's city centre, and rental agencies line the streets around it, making pickup easy whether you're arriving off an overnight ferry from Italy or heading onward. Patra itself is walkable, but a car is useful if you're continuing into the Peloponnese rather than catching a connecting bus or train. Compare prices at Discover Cars.
