Egiali to Naxos Route Map

Map of the Cyclades showing the ferry route west-north-west from Egiali to Naxos.

Egiali to Naxos connects the northern port of Amorgos with the largest island in the Cyclades. Blue Star Ferries run the Blue Star Naxos and Small Cyclades Lines the smaller Express Scopelitis, and times vary widely, from a little over two hours to around five, depending on which boat you take and how many of the Small Cyclades it calls at. The Scopelitis route in particular is a proper local service, hopping between Donousa, Koufonissi, Schinoussa and Iraklia.

Naxos Town, the Chora, sits right at the port, with the Portara, the huge marble doorway from an unfinished Temple of Apollo, standing on the islet at the harbour entrance. The Venetian Kastro quarter climbs the hill behind the waterfront, and beyond the town the island has long sandy beaches at Plaka and Mikri Vigla and mountain villages such as Halki and Apiranthos.

The route runs roughly daily in season, with the Blue Star and the Scopelitis covering different days and times. Current sailings and fares are listed below. Naxos is the main hub for this part of the Aegean, so onward connections to Paros, Mykonos, Santorini and Piraeus are easy from there.

Tips for the Egiali to Naxos ferry

  • Children under a certain age travel free on most Greek ferry lines; the exact age threshold varies by operator, so check the terms when booking.
  • A window seat in the indoor saloon gives you light and a view without the wind; worth claiming early on a medium-length crossing.
  • Sunscreen is mandatory on the exposed deck of a ferry in summer; even a two-hour crossing can result in sunburn if you stand in direct sun.
  • Once you arrive in Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades, the giant marble Portara gateway standing on a small islet at the entrance to the harbour is an unmissable landmark. The island offers the full range of Greek island experiences: long sandy beaches, mountain villages, ancient ruins, and a fertile interior producing excellent local cheeses and wines.
