Katapola to Naxos Route Map

Katapola on Amorgos to Naxos is the busiest link off the island, served by Blue Star Ferries, Seajets and Small Cyclades Lines between them. On a high-speed boat such as the Champions League Jet 1 or Super Jet 2 it takes a little over an hour; on the Blue Star Naxos it is longer, and on the Express Scopelitis, which wanders through the Small Cyclades, it can take most of the day. Which boat you take matters more here than on almost any other route in the group.
Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, and the ferry comes in at Naxos Town, where the Portara, the huge freestanding marble doorway of an unfinished Temple of Apollo, stands at the harbour entrance. The town has a Venetian old quarter, plenty of accommodation and an easy waterfront. Inland there are mountain villages such as Halki and Apiranthos, and long sandy beaches down the west coast.
With services several times a day in season, this is a genuinely flexible connection. The current timetable and fares are shown below, with the cheapest tickets starting around €10 and the fast boats costing considerably more. Naxos is the main hub for the Small Cyclades, so it is the natural place to change for Koufonissi, Schinoussa, Heraklia and Donoussa.

Hiring a car
Is it worth hiring a car on Naxos?
Yes, it is worth it. Naxos is the largest Cycladic island, and its best beaches and mountain villages, Apollonas, Halki, the Tragaea, are 30 to 45 minutes' drive from Naxos Town. Rental desks sit right at the ferry quay, a one-minute walk from the bus terminal. Buses cover the main coast road, but a car gets you into the interior. Compare local suppliers at Discover Cars.

Tips for the Katapola to Naxos ferry
- Amorgos has two ferry ports, Katapola in the south and Aegiali in the north, about 20km apart by road and roughly 30 to 40 minutes' drive. Always check which port your ticket departs from before setting off, as the two are not interchangeable.
- The Donoussa crossing is usually run by the small Express Skopelitis ferry, which is more sensitive to rough weather than larger vessels on the main Piraeus routes. In poor conditions check locally, as sailings can be delayed or cancelled at short notice.
- A local bus links Chora to Katapola port, but its timetable shifts seasonally and is only loosely tied to ferry times, so confirm departure times locally rather than relying on a fixed schedule, especially for early sailings.
- Night sailings that arrive early morning are popular with budget travellers who save on a night's accommodation – cabins on these routes book out first.
- Once you arrive in Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades, the giant marble Portara gateway standing on a small islet at the entrance to the harbour is an unmissable landmark. The island offers the full range of Greek island experiences: long sandy beaches, mountain villages, ancient ruins, and a fertile interior producing excellent local cheeses and wines.
